Check out the ref!: Used: watercolor, white gel pen. Time: about 40 minutes total. Too lazy to check for dimensions atm...
/commence rant/ Sorry for all the recent referenced paintings but I'm going to be doing a few more of these. They're not exactly my best work, nor do I spend multiple hours on them...nor are they completely accurate to the original photo but I think they're giving me a great amount of experience in learning how to draw and paint things I normally wouldn't. I'm not trying in anyway to make an exact replica of the original photo as well, so don't expect every detail to be alike. I'm simply experimenting painting beautiful photos the way I see them, in my own style, and with my own techniques. If you can understand my rant I fully support and hope you critique my art. /end rant/
Hello! There is really not much to criticize about. I like your shading with the black around the face. It makes a realistic texture. The white part on the upper beak between the two white parts, I think, is a bit weird, and should be filled in a little with, maybe, a light black (I guess that doesn't make much sense if you think about it, but you know what I mean). I like how the eye has a shiny feeling, and that the highlight shows some of the darker colors through it. Also, though I know this isn't on your ref. photo, but I think you should be able to tell that it's a black BASE with iridescence. Great painting, though!
P.S. I suck at titles, too! You should see the backs of my paintings. It says things like "American Kestrel".
well it's best when using reference to try and not just translate but paint an original using it only as a guide. otherwise it just looks artificial and strange, this doesn't look artificial though so great job. I think it's great
