A suggestion would be angling the stars so that they don't all look like they're standing straight up.
So what if you don't have 1000 paper stars? *points to the sky* LOL. That should add up to be enough.
Yeah ... having difficulty scanning the background? Tell me about it! I have noticed that, after making a scan, the hue, the brightness, and the contrast of the scanned image file may need to be adjusted if the initial image does not meet your expectations.
